Make It Nifty - Vanessa J Turner - Profile Pic

Hey there!

I’m Vanessa. I’m so glad you stopped by. So I guess you want to know about me 🙂 I like making things and the learning and experience that comes with it. I made this website so I can share what I make and it’s also a great way for me to record my making journey.

Sewing is my favourite, but I do like, knitting, crochet and other craft too. I mainly sew clothes, but I like to sew accessories and sometimes home wares too. I’m lucky enough to have a dedicated sewing studio (it’s just a bedroom really) where I use my Janome MyStyle 5027LE sewing machine and Janome 8002DX overlocker.

I first learnt how to sew on a sewing machine when I was about 8, I think, when I sewed random things on my mum’s sewing machine for a short time. I didn’t get into sewing as an adult until I was at university and bought my own sewing machine. I’m still using it now. Initially, I sewed mainly crafty things like mini quilts and other small crafts.

I started my clothes sewing journey when I woke up on 1st January 2012 and thought to myself, “Dammit! I’m just going to sew something I can wear. It doesn’t have to be amazing. Just something.” I made the a pair of pyjama shorts out of a sheet I’d bought at a second hand shop (thrift shop). They were terrible, but I loved them and I was hooked on sewing clothes.

In 2014 I took a patternmaking class and I really enjoy the freedom that gives me when I want to make something I have dreamt up. I don’t have to go searching for a pattern, I can draft it myself.

So that’s a little bit about my making.

I really like connecting with people so connect with me online or send me an email. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you come back again soon 🙂
